The magnificent and enormous Borobudur temple happens to be the world’s biggest Buddhist monument. Located in Central Java, the temple stands majestically on a hilltop facing the distant hills and the lush green fields. It stands as an icon for Indonesian cultural heritage. It is truly a marvel in every sense. It was also considered one amongst the seven wonders of the ancient world.
It takes a one hour drive by car to reach Borobudur from Yogyakarta. You may find several flights from Jakarta and Bali to Yogyakarta taking around one hour from both the destinations.
In line with the Borobudur temple, there are two other smaller temples, namely Pawon and Mendut. Pawon is 1.15 kilometers and Mendut about 3 kilometers away from the Borobudur temple. The two temples form the route to reach the Borobudur temple for the Waisak Day Festival commemorating the birthday of Lord Buddha. Besides the temple you may also take a walk in the surrounding villages enjoying the sceneries.
It is a matter of uncertainty about when this temple was built. But it is thought to have built somewhere at the end of 7th century or the beginning of the 8th century. Built on an area of 55,000 square meters on a lava rock, it has six rectangular storey, three terraces and centrally placed Stupa, totally rounding up to 10 storeys. Each storey symbolizes different stages of life, Buddha being the last one. You can see the stupa ornamented with 504 effigies of Buddha and 2676 panels. There are 1460 narrative relieves in totality on the walls of this monument.
The temple is divided into three stages, the first being the Kamadhatu, which signifies the materialistic world, the second being the Rupadhatu that implies to the transitional sphere where the human beings release themselves from the worldly matters and the last and the most important being the Arupadhatu, the state of formlessness.
