gunung leuser national parkOne of the biggest National Parks of Indonesia, Gunang Leuser National Park mostly lies in the regions of Aceh and few parts of Northern Sumatra Island. The biodiversity in the ecosystem is awe-inspiring. The area extends up to 950,000 hectares that is approximately 7927 square kilometers

You can get access to the Gunang Leuser National Park from Medan which gets to Kutacane in about 5 to 6 hours. From Kutacane, you can catch up a bus that leads to Lawe Gurah Tourist Park from where you gain entry to this Park. There is other way wherein you can take a bus from Benjai to Medan and from here to Bukit-Lawang. It is rather suggested that the best time to visit the national park is from June to October.

The Gunang Leuser National Park is an abode for approximately 700 different species. 176 species of mammals, 320 bird species and 194 varieties of reptiles and amphibians together constitute the 700 species of animals here. The famous Orangutan, Sumatran Tigers, leopard cat, Sumatran rhinoceros, silver leaf monkey, Asian elephant, banded leaf monkey, long tailed macaque  orangutan, Temminck's golden cat, Malayan sun bear, siamang, red giant flying squirrel, swamp crocodile, Sumatran Serow, and the clouded leopard.
Like the swarming number of different varieties of animal, it also has a rich flora. Rafflessia, which is the longest flower in the world, is found here.

Trekking, canoeing, mountain climbing, rafting, hiking, bird watching, camping, caving and boating are the various adventurous activities that you can encounter when in the Gunang Leuser National Park.

Tangakhan, Bukit-Lawang and Ketambe are the nearby villages where you can catch glimpse of some of the animals like orangutan, elephants and numerous varieties of birds.
