Ujung Kulon National Park is located on the southernmost tip of the Western Java province. It is the only remaining habitat for the one horned Java rhinoceros. The area of the park includes the Ujung Kulon peninsula that includes the Handeleum, Panaitan and Peucang islands and the Honje Mountain giving a spectacular and ecstatic look to the park. The topography makes it an exceptional nature conservation place.
To reach Peucang island from Carita by a wooden boat takes 5 hours and 3 hours by a speed boat. Carita can be reached from Jakarat via Cilegon. April to September is considered to be the best time to visit here. The park is specified to be a world heritage site by UNESCO since 1991. The total area of this park is 120,551 hectares including the land area and the area covered by the neighboring sea and coral reefs.
This exceedingly valuable area for wildlife conservation has mixture of wide variety of flora with tropical rain forests, mangroves and lowland forests. The marine life in the adjacent sea seems to be a kaleidoscope of various colors. The dense, thick forest of this park is a home for the extinct Javanian rhinoceros which are only 60 in number all over the world. Apart from rhinoceros, wild ox, panther, crocodiles, deer, wild boar, snakes and birds are also found here.
The other places of interest are the Citerjun Terraces famous for the stalactite and calcified terraces created by water; Cidaon Grazing Grounds is a place where one can observe various animals while grazing and Tanjunga Layar Walk with a trail that has some spectacular views. Snorkeling, diving, jungle trekking and canoeing are some adventurous activities that visitors enjoy here. The park has quite a lot of posts of the Perilindungan Hutan dan Pelesterian Alam (PHPA) where overnight stay is possible.
